Toshiba Takes Aim at Car-Audio Market With New Highly Integrated, High-Performance Single Chip CD-MP3 Processors
Introducing TC94A60MFG, the World's First Single-Chip ATRAC CD Decoder
SAN FRANCISCO, March 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)* today announced a pair of highly integrated, high- performance CD-MP3 devices that enable playback of CD and multiple compressed audio formats from a single chip. Designated TC94A54MFG and TC94A60MFG, the new devices are targeted at car-audio applications and feature high-quality audio output in I(2)S, S/PDIF or analog stereo formats. They integrate a CD servo, RF amplifier, compressed audio decoder, 1Mbit SRAM and digital-to- analog converter (DAC) in a system-in-package (SiP) solution; these features are also available in two discrete chips. The innovative TC94A60MFG chip is the world's first single-chip Adaptive TRansform Acoustic Coding (ATRAC(R)) CD decoder. TAEC will be demonstrating the TC94A54MFG at the Embedded Systems Conference here this week.
"Toshiba Corporation is a leader in automotive electronics solutions. This announcement is another advance in Toshiba's growing family of products for the audio CD and compressed-audio CD player segment," said David Cruikshank, senior business development engineer for digital consumer products in the ASSP Business Unit at TAEC. "TC94A54MFG and TC94A60MFG are ideal solutions for low cost, full-featured car-audio CD-MP3 players. Available in a variety of pin-compatible ROM versions with built-in programmable RAM, these flexible devices enable quick customization and end-product differentiation." He added that the new ICs complement Toshiba's other solutions for car entertainment, including microcontrollers, Bluetooth, audio power amplifiers and IR receivers and transmitters. Additional new products in the CD-MP3 family with even higher levels of integration are in development and will be announced in the future.
Technical features common to both ICs include the following:
* Incorporate CD servo and RF head amplifier with built-in DAC
* Feature compressed audio decoder
* Benefit from extensive, growing decoder firmware library that includes
MPEG-1/MPEG-2 Layer 3 (MP3), Windows Media(R) Audio 9 (WMA9), Advanced
Audio Coding (AAC), ATRAC CD, graphic equalization and surround-field
effects
* Capable of CD text data decoding
* Support CD-DA and CD-R/RW formats
* Available in standard ROM versions or can be tailored to specific
customer requirements
* Include 1Mbit SRAM for error correction and tag/file management
* Feature programmable RAM for software customization
* Have a standby function for data storage in the 1Mbit SRAM
* Allow either I(2)S or S/PDIF output for an external DAC
* Include a 4-bit parallel CPU interface
* Support 3.3 volt (V) and 1.5V power requirements
